Resolve your target audience's problems with content to win them over to your brand

2m to read /

Today's digitally savvy consumer (read as mobile powered) is looking for solutions 24/7, 365. Brands can transform their digital marketing by being 'Right There, Right Then' with their message to win them over.

When a consumer wants to know something, wants to go somewhere (on a holiday, to a restaurant, to a business location), wants to do something and wants to buy something, they need to connect with the brands that have solutions right away. Simply put, these are the four basic need states that digital marketing needs to answer. And answer quickly and effectively. By being 'Right There, Right Then'.

micro moments by Google

Today's marketing needs to be in the here and now. It is about intent, and the answer to that intent needs to be there right away. Today's audience is starved of time, and have very little attention. Brands need to adopt the following five 'experiential' forces to transform their digital marketing.

1.  Synchronize

Today brands need to have a well synchronized multi channel strategy. In our world of Always On, it's important to be across all consumer touch points (including all offline) to lead the consumer towards becoming a customer. The process of learn, discover, research, socialize and buy is best optimized to be seamless and uniform. You can't transform your digital marketing unless it is founded on a one brand many channel strategy.

2.  Localize

Brands today need to have content to meet the demands of the consumer – in many forms. But what's critical is context. Consumer behavior is changing because of what mobile uniquely allows them to do – to find most answers when they need it, around where they are. Mobile's geo location technology empowers consumers more than ever. Brands need to focus on local first, specially those in retail.

3.  Personalize

Mass marketing is fading fast to micro marketing where products and experiences that are created to treat customers individually—along with personalized marketing treatments—are what's winning the marketing battle. You really need to know your audience, and their intentions. Audience insight is your first key step. Insight is what transforms your digital marketing.

4.  Socialize

Today, it's absolutely essential for a brand to be there on social media. Consumers and customers want to be empowered by brands to be connected and be in the know. And social media is where they turn to for that connection and brand engagement. Social is where today's consumer gets informed and inspired.

A website is no longer enough, and on your website you must include social sharing buttons and ensure that web content is always shared on social platforms that you are on. Social media interaction is key – you really cannot engage and interact on your website with your audience as you can on social. Make this your key channel and be relevant. With today's social "buy buttons" social has become a marketplace. But it's not about just selling.

Move from Selling to building Relationships – this is what will end up giving you a far more robust presence online. One that meets and engages today's audience.

5.  Maximize

Your brand's content marketing needs to be both relevant and engaging. That content, that information needs to be in the here and now. It needs to be current, always-on and outstanding to rise above the rest.

Brands need to realize that one size does not fit all. The campaign is traditional. The TV spot is losing its impact. Localization is really becoming important. And personalization of brand message is what is cutting through. All these factors are critical to help transform your digital marketing.

6 Winning Social Media Post and Content Ideas that help engage audiences

3m to read /

Here are some ideas for social media posts that help your brand keep your audience engaged. You should not be posting content that's focused purely on your brand – that's boring. But even if you post on topics that are interesting, that somehow connect to your brand, you still need inspired content buckets to use to vary it up a bit. Here are a few content types that you can use to keep your audience interested and engaged:

Before you start, you really need to know your audience. Your customers, your targets are looking for content that helps them, content that is useful to them, in context of your brad or product. It is critical to realize that Customer Insights is your First Step in any Digital Marketing. Once you are armed with that insight, you can develop posts that serve to those areas of interest...

1. How-To

'How-to' posts have immediate value for your audience. They are practical, it helps them with their daily lives or solves a particular problem they may face. 'How-to' posts also makes your brand look an authority on the topic – and you become a go-to source for information and inspiration. You'll need to think about your audience and not just interaction with your brand. What do they really need to know, versus what you want to tell them? Think of them first, not your brand. Think value.

2. Tips

Tips are simple posts that could be quick lists or small nuggets of information for your audience. They should be readable quickly – one should be able to skim over them. Tips are tactical and different from How-To posts because they don't need to explain a whole process in detail. Tips are highly ever green and shareable, and have key word value as well.

3. Lists

List posts are for quick, immediate consumption. They can be shared easily, and people consume these "listicles" far more readily and easily than any other type of posts. They are optimized for web and mobile consumption and get shared more often. Good list posts are not long. The points can be one liners and can easily be converted to visuals. List posts can be built around your brand or product, but should ideally, go beyond that in providing value.

4. Tools

Tool posts are like Tips and How-To posts, but these don't necessarily have to be your brand related directly. You can curate these from around the web if you need to. Grab hold of useful sites, plugins, and downloads that make your life easier and share them with your readers. Keep the content useful and relevant to your topic and your brand.

5. Influencer content

You can get relevant and insightful content from influencers in your domain. Influencer content adds credibility to your brand and also builds relationships with the right influencers you use. They in turn can help build audiences and engage them for your brand or product. You can simply curate influencer content and serve it up for your audiences on relevant topics, or get the influencers to participate and contribute to your content.

10 Essential Steps to Influencer Marketing Success for your Brand

6. Thought leadership

These are point-of-view posts that establish your brand as a knowledgeable authority on topics that your audiences find relevant. The purpose of these posts is to demonstrate understanding and command of the topics you want to lead on. These may not have tactical impact on your audience, but have larger corporate impact as a brand. They make your company look great and reliable. They should be transparent and open, and have consumer/customer value as an end goal, and should not be about corporate drum beating.

6. Interactive and participatory

You can have your audience participate and contribute to your posts and your content overall. User generated content and opinion goes a long way in convincing your audiences about your brand or product. It's so much better that just one-way posting from you. Mix it up with polls, ask for UGC (User Generated Content), request them to share their opinion, create quizzes, and ask your audience to develop content with tips, experiences and hacks.

Keeping your content types varied and interesting is key to engagement.  That's Digital Marketing Strategies 101.

5 ways to get fans to create social media content for brands

3m to read /

Include your fans in your social media marketing by letting them create content for your brands. Social media content today is a lot about story telling, and today those stories need to be authentic and ones that add value to the consumer.

According to a study done by Nielsen, “92% of consumers trust online content from friends & family above all other forms of brand messaging. And they trust strangers second most — far more than they trust content from brands. Social media content generated by your fans – your community – is a great way to add that spark of authenticity and creativity and enables marketers to tell brand related stories without having to work hard at creating them.

1. Curate content under a clever and catchy #hashtag

Let your brand be the platform that your fans use to get recognized and be creative. Focus the spotlight on your fans and you'll get a whole load of user generated content. Use a clever and catchy hashtag to curate all the content – which will give you instant access to what your fans and followers are uploading.

Check out this amazing #wanderlust campaign by National Geographic. It asked users to simply tag their photos of beautiful places and people with a @wanderlust hashtag – creating a much loved opportunity for fans to highlight their photography skills under a famous brand banner – National Geographic. The brand had access to a huge collection of content that they could use in their social media.

2. Ask them to be creative with your products

Be the brand that brings out the creative side of your fans and followers. Encourage them to think outside the proverbial box and come up with interesting ways to showcase your products and how they use them. All of the social platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and Snapchat offer your fans great opportunities to show their creative sides with photos, videos, tweets or simple posts.

The key is to get your fans to get involved with your products and your brand and give them the freedom to be creative. Unboxings are a great way to encourage fans to create user generated content around your product.

3. Ask them for their opinion

Fans like to have a voice – specially when it comes to brands and products on social media. Ask your fans and your community for their opinion. Let them tell you about their preferences, ways they use your products, cool features (that may be even you didn't know about), hacks, unboxings, new product ideas, flavors, colors etc. Run polls across your various platforms. People look to social media for recommendations, reviews and feedback from “real” people – make these authentic conversations work for your brand.

4. Run contests with low barriers

A lot of brands try to get user generated content by running contests and some are hugely successful. But they key to running contests is a prize they'll value, and more importantly, removing or lowering barriers to entering. Make it easy. Keep it simple. Allow text only submissions. Don't insist on high quality videos in HD.

Open up the contest across multiple platforms whenever possible. You can use a catchy #hashtag to bring all the entries together (see Point #1). Contests should motivate and encourage your fans and followers and inspire them to be creative and innovative. Without too much effort. For example, one research finding shows that "contests which allowed for text-only submissions (in addition to photos and video) saw a 900% lift in submission volume."

Here's an interesting post from Hootsuite on some of the best UGC contests.

5. Offer multiple ways to upload content

Offer multiple ways to upload content across multiple platforms. Don't just insist on submissions that are limited to smartphone uploads (like Snapchat). Open up across various platforms and ask for content. But remember, in today's mobile driven world, you absolutely must engage and make your submissions possible using mobile. User generated content (UGC) comes in various forms, formats, and sizes. Be open to harnessing a 140 character tweet or a long form blog post, a 10 second 'snap' or a 3 minute YouTube unboxing. Remember they're all products of brand love.

UGC or User Generated Content can help your social media in unprecedented ways. Remember to make it easy for your fans to engage with your brand and product and it will flow in.

And that's the basics of digital marketing strategy. That's 101.

How VR and 360 degree video is changing advertising and content marketing

4m to read /

Virtual Reality (VR) and 360 degree video has the power of changing how brands can better engage their audiences with advertising and content marketing. While VR and 360 degree video is in early stages of adoption by brands, the potential is immense.

Brands and content creators need to know that today's content hungry and tech savvy consumer is hugely interested in VR. Global search interest on Google grew by nearly 4X in the last year. And Google are doing a great job in empowering this new technology. Google has shipped millions of Google Cardboard viewers to help bring the VR experience to everyone. As have many other brands like Etihad Airlines and Volvo recently.

Google says that the "technology has the potential to change our daily lives—from how we communicate to how we spend our leisure time. It's early days, but it's already happening, and now is the time for brands and creators to understand what it all means." While Google Cardboard was an initial step, Google's new VR platform "Daydream will enable even more powerful, mobile, high-quality experiences with a headset that's comfortable at an accessible price."

What VR does

Google says that the "promise of VR is what the industry calls "presence"—the feeling that you're really somewhere else. VR cameras like Jump can capture the entire experience of a place—every corner, every angle. In the not-so-distant future, cameras like these will be capturing experiences all over the world. What does this mean for audiences? How about access to the best seats in the house at any event—floor seats at the NBA playoffs, a box at La Scala, front row at the Beyoncé show?" Imagine how this empowers brands for their content marketing initiatives.

VR and 360 degree Video

Google already has made impact with 360 degree video. "Viewers can see video from every angle just by swiping or moving the phone or tablet around—with no headset required. Uploads of 360-degree videos continue to grow and have doubled over the past three months. Brands are forging the way, using 360-degree video to film big events or get creative with ads. BMW used this technology for an ad featuring a 360-degree car race. The "School of Rock" musicalcreated a 360-degree music video. AT&T simulated a car crash to drive home its phone safety message."

Virtual reality takes the 360-degree video experience a step further by adding a sense of depth. When viewed with a VR headset images become three-dimensional, which adds to the feeling of immersiveness. On top of that, spatial audio lets people listen to audio from all directions, just as in the real world. That's what drives interaction and therefore engagement.

For content creators, the potential of 360-degree video and VR is immense, but it'll require a shift in thinking. VR lets viewers be active participants; they can look wherever they want.  This makes VR and 360-degree video an incredibly powerful tool to create empathy. When a viewer feels like they are there, they have a greater sense of the situation. Messages become more impactful."

Google reminds us that on YouTube, creators are using the medium to create truly transportive experiences across sports, news, education, and fashion. The New York Times puts viewers in the shoes of displaced children around the world. Virtual field trips let teachers take students places a school bus can't. Fashionistas can get a front row seat at the latest runway shows from Jason Wu, Hugo Boss, and Dior.

Virtual reality is no longer a novelty. It has real applications for brands today. But is it worth pursuing? And will it make sense and add value to your target audience?

As in any aspect of digital marketing, Customer or Consumer Insights is your First Step in Digital Marketing with any video content you create. Google suggests brands examine the potential first in their post:

Four questions for brands interested in VR:

Here are some questions brands should consider before investing in VR technology according to Google:

Will VR give viewers an experience that they otherwise couldn't have? The subject matter should truly take advantage of the medium—transport people to a place, immerse them in a world, and compel them to explore.

Could you give shoppers a better feel for your product? According to a study from Ericsson ConsumerLab, shopping was the top reason worldwide smartphone users were interested in VR, with "seeing items in real size and form when shopping online" cited by 64% of respondents. This doesn't just apply to retail brands. Cadillac is already using VR to create virtual dealerships

Will your recording environment be rich with things to see? If you're shooting in a simple white room with nothing on the walls, probably not. If you're at a sports event or a music festival, there's likely plenty to see.

Will viewers want to continue watching beyond the initial "That's cool" moment? It can be a challenge to get viewers to stick around after a minute or so. Make sure you have a compelling hook that will keep them engaged.

Winning Content Strategy: Always share something valuable and useful. No matter how cool your content is formatted – using 360 video or VR, if it does not provide value, it's just not going to work.

And that's the basics of digital marketing strategies. That's 101. Please share this post with your friends and colleagues today... And do comment if you feel you want to add to this.

5 Ways to Develop a Consumer Focused Mobile Marketing Strategy

4m to read /

People today are increasingly using their mobiles to find answers to questions and solutions to problems. They are doing this while on the go, and even at work or home. Mobile is with them 24/7, and today, brands simply need to power up their mobile marketing strategy and focus on the Consumer – particularly their Mobile Search marketing to meet their target audiences at their moments of need.

Google has defined four key moments when we are online. When a need arises, consumers quickly turn to Search on, say a Google and a YouTube to find a resolution to that need. These needs arise when a consumer wants to know something, wants to go somewhere (on a holiday, to a restaurant, to a business location), wants to do something and wants to buy something. Simply put, these are the four basic need states that digital marketing needs to answer. Google calls these 'Micro Moments', and these are real game changers.

To start with, you'll need to align with the new thinking that consumer intent is far more relevant than demographics – targeting consumers by their intent at the moment is the new way in digital marketing (see why here).

People rely on their mobile devices to get information and inspiration. They literally manage their lives on mobile. 91% of those surveyed (in the US) by Google use mobile for inspiration in the middle of a task.

82% consult their phones while in a store. 66% of consumers consult their phones to learn more about something they saw on a TV commercial. And, 51% have purchased from a company or brand other than the one they intended, because the information they found on Search was useful.

So, your brand, your product really needs to meet your target audiences at their moments of need.

1. Get your SEO powered up

So, in this search intense, search driven world of how consumers seek out solutions and connect with brands that are able to provide resolution to their needs, how do you be there? Build an effective SEO (Search Engine Optimization) program for your website? (See here for the Basics of Search – Understanding SEO and SEM in 2016).

And here's 7 Things you need to bullet proof your SEO.

2. Have relevant Content for today's searching consumer

Use content to better market your products and services, to better connect to your target audiences, and engage consumers. Make sure that your content is search friendly – and that the context in which it is delivered is truly relevant. Keep it simple. Use familiar terminology for easy reading, keep paragraphs short and use lists. Readers like lists, quotes and statistics. Include these elements whenever possible. Here are six ways to get your content marketing strategy to work harder for you to deliver great Search results when your audience is looking.

3. Use the power of Video

YouTube is the world's second most popular search engine. After Google. Your brand really needs to be there when people are looking for solutions to their needs – and are particularly looking for video content. On YouTube, most people look for How To solutions. Encourage User Generated Content on video about your products – count on unboxings, reviews, how-to's and as well populate your online presence with commercials, video posts, and brand videos in general. Your target audience is more likely to click on search results that include a video. Google gives preference to video results on their Result Pages.

4. Deliver answers via Social Media

Today, it's absolutely essential for a brand to be there on social media. Consumers and customers want to be empowered by brands to be connected and be in the know.  Social media is where they turn to for that connection and brand engagement.

Social media interaction is key – you really cannot engage and interact on your website with your audience as you can on social. Make this your key channel and be relevant. Improve your social media engagement. Move from Selling to building Relationships – this is what will end up giving you a far more robust presence online.

5. Use the right keywords and hashtags to connect with your targets

Start with keyword analytics. You need to listen to what's being said and build on that. Start with listening, and make this an on going source of what makes up your strategy. Ensure that your owned media content (your website, your blogpost) has all the right keywords that your target consumers would associate with your brand, your product, your vertical, your competitors, your industry. Keep this approach fresh, and constantly evolving, or else your brand or product will simply slide down the results pages.

Use hashtags (#) to determine what's being said around your product. Use them in your twitter presence and instagram posts.

When your target audience turns to search and is looking for a solution to their need, you need to first be there. Whether in the form of searches, app interactions, mobile site visits, or even YouTube video views, these need based micro-moments happen constantly. Just being there with the right search results, the right content, the right message is key.But get the simple stuff done first. As listed above. That's the basics. That's Digital Marketing 101.

Please share this post with your friends and colleagues. This may be just their moment of need!

YouTube unleashes 360 degree Live streaming – takes on Facebook

YouTube have announced 360 degree live streaming video in a battle for video supremacy, taking Facebook head on. It has been a battle for live video lately, and for a couple of days after Facebook's F8 conference, it looked like YouTube was lagging. No pun intended. But yesterday, Google's YouTube unleashed a new feature that lets creators and brands live stream their 360-degree clips.

360° Live streaming on YouTube is catching up to Facebook?

It's not a giant leap for YouTube. It's a quick catch up. YouTube had already launched support for 360-degree videos a year ago. Brands like Nike, GoPro, Gatorade, and Lionsgate have experimented with it. Lionsgateused the YouTube feature for a  360-degree video for its 2015 film "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2".

This move, was a retort, a comeback against Facebook, who bragged about a 360° camera support and a live content hub at their annual event last week.

What we can expect from YouTube's 360° Live streaming?

YouTube announced "...these days, virtual reality and 360-degree video can help get you one step closer to actually being at those places and in those moments. Today, we’re taking immersive video even further with 360-degree live streaming on YouTube."

For one of its first big tests with 360-degree live streaming, YouTube will stream a handful of performances during Coachella from April 22 to April 24 with T-Mobile is sponsoring the stream. Google has been live streaming the music festival since 2011.

YouTube says "We first launched support for 360-degree videos back in March 2015. From musicians to athletes to brands, creators have done some incredible things with this technology. Now, they’ll be able to do even more to bring fans directly into their world, with 360-degree live streaming. And after years of live streaming Coachella for fans around the world who can’t attend the festival, this year we’re bringing you the festival like never before by live streaming select artist performances in 360 degrees this weekend."

What's in YouTube 360-degree live streaming for us all?

The YouTube blogpost adds "What excites me most about 360-degree storytelling is that it lets us open up the world's experiences to everyone. Students can now experience news events in the classroom as they unfold. Travelers can experience faraway sites and explorers can deep-sea dive, all without the physical constraints of the real world. And today's kids dreaming of going to a basketball game or a concert can access those experiences firsthand, even if they're far away from the court. What were once limited experiences are now available to anyone, anywhere, at any time." This is really a good bit of storytelling from Google right there. We just hope that brands and marketers – and content creators are up for the challenge. And are they ready for it yet?

YouTube also added 'spatial audio' for the 360 degree feature

"Starting today, we’re also launching spatial audio for on-demand YouTube videos. Just as watching a concert in 360 degrees can give you an unmatched immersive experience, spatial audio allows you to listen along as you do in real life, where depth, distance and intensity all play a role. Try out this playlist on your Android device."

Platform based live streaming may be the future

It seems like platform based live streaming may be the imminent future for live streamed content. And now with 360 degree formats, it may as well become our go to sources for inspired content – well, so we hope. Buzzfeed's Facebook Live content on the exploding watermelon has 10,559, 409 views already!

We'll just wait and see which brands jump on this new opportunity and gain traction. Content has to be thought through to make sure it works in context with the feature. You don't live stream, say, someone applying mascara in beautiful 360 degrees. But you would probably live stream a daring video of a landing on Mars. That's marketing basics. That's Digital Marketing Strategies 101.

4 ways to fight online distraction with compelling video ads and content

With so many distractions online fighting for your target audience's eyeballs, how do you create video ads and content that really cuts through the clutter? With multi-screening becoming so common these days, with people jumping from watching tv to their mobile devices during ad breaks, and with so much fighting for online eyeballs, how do you get attention?

Brands today realize the importance of solid, entertaining, meaningful video content online. Today's platforms recognize the fact that people don't watch ads, or any content for that matter, unless it draws them out with compelling, creatively superior, and value-adding content. Google knows this, which is why their 'True View' is is 'built on the promise than you’ll only pay when someone chooses to watch your video ad'. Brands on YouTube have to really creative to grab and hold attention. True, that they don't have to pay when someone skips their ad, but then what's the point?

Brands today have four ways (at least), to fight this attention deficit syndrome that consumers have.

1. Try for interaction and participation by making the viewer curious.

Many brands are experimenting with interactive ads – online ads where the viewer actually immerses himself and experiences the ad rather than just watch, or worse, skip it. One of the most shared and memorable interactive ads is of course the Hunter Shoots the Bear ad which has 17 million views on YouTube. It is interactive, funny, engaging and totally, completely share worthy. There are several other examples. The Skittles interactive ad is ridiculously interactive and funny. The Hot Wheels ad is cool and is really an interactive game in a video. The Netflix Daredevil interactive banner is also a great example.

2. Tell a story and make it an interesting one.

Whether its a story in a single video, or a series of ads that lead to the next 'episode' you can tell a really interesting story in your ads. This is a far cry from the quick "Buy Me, Buy Me" product ad. This route takes a whole new road – a road that the consumer finds that he or she wants to take – and hopefully enjoy the journey. Because there is a reward – an interest generating, absorbing tale being told.

There's a compelling, absorbing multi-part story told and it is interactive as well –  called 'Choose a Different Ending'. It is a great social campaign that draws the viewer in and it unfolds like a mini movie.

3. Personalization and micro-targeting your content

Data and creativity are now intertwining and enabling brands to produce 'customized' and 'personalized' video ads aimed at a one-to-one audience. That's a whole ballpark away from the old tv broadcast ads aimed at the one-and-all audience.

Personalized ads may be like the Coca Cola Share a Coke ad with the bottle with their name on it, or may be 'customized' to a micro-target geo location – making it totally contextual to viewers in a particular part of town, for example. Video ads in campaigns can also be created with extreme customization aimed at behavior and/or demographics.  The Southwest airline one-to-one video is a fantastic example of personalization to the extreme.

4. Content in context.

Regardless of how interesting your ads are, if they aren't being delivered in context, you won't get much mileage out of them. Often brands create just a typical ad for online which they deliver across all channels that video can be delivered in. The'll stick it on YouTube, on Facebook, put up an edit on Instagram, and of course use it for their online paid campaigns. That really doesn't work any more. People don't go on Facebook for the same reasons they check out YouTube. And the audiences are not the same on Instagram as they are on say, Google+. Respect that and build different ways to reach them.

Even within an online campaign, the target audience needs to feel interested and compelled 'at that time' of viewing the ad to click on it and engage with it. Social media and online guru Gary Vaynerchuk highlights the importance of context in his post 'Content is King but Context is God'. It's quite clear, what he says: respect the platform and the audience, don't interrupt the experience and be consistent and self aware.

Absolutely. If you are trying to engage a consumer with an ad about, say, the latest new model of your SUV, you really want to interrupt the viewer who is surfing the internet looking for tips on mascara?

The end game

The net net of what you want to achieve is to get your message through to the right audience at the right time. Getting that message through has become difficult in today's attention deficit order of things online. Time and space are fragmented, every one is multi tasking, they aren't watching tv on tv any more, so you need to find ways to really cut through all that. The four ways to cut through all that clutter and distraction online are just simple ways to create compelling content, and breakthrouh ads. Let me know if you have more. And share this please.
